Deaf Awareness Week 2021

September 20 - 26 is the International Week of Deaf People (IWDP), which is known as Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) here in the United States. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Thriving Deaf Communities”.

Celebrating DAW allows Deaf individuals and the community to promote our Deaf identity, culture, and history; to encourage social inclusion; and to raise awareness of organizations that serve Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened. Annually, the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) decides on a theme to honor IWDP. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Thriving Deaf Communities”.

Check out social media throughout the week to celebrate Deaf communities and organizations that work hard at the local, national, and international level to elevate our people. #IWDP #IDSL Lexington School for the Deaf has traditionally celebrated this week and we will continue to do so this school year.

We have events lined up for our students. In closing, I’d like to share the slogan for the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). “Nothing about us, without us!”
