Elementary 8 Conducts Bat Research

During the 2025/2026 school year, David Wilcox's Elementary 8 (E8) classroom participated in National Geographic's Explorer Classroom Project. The class selected bat conservation as their project.  Click here to see a copy of their Bat Conservation newsletter!
Under the guidance of the Gotham Bat Conservancy, students learned about bat species, habitats, behavioral characteristics, and ecological contributions. Students met with park rangers at NYC's Forest Park and hiked to Strack Pond, a known bat habitat. Using data from the Bat Conservancy's ultrasonic recorders, students analyzed bat call sound waves to identify the types of bats in Forest Park. Two Gotham Bat Conservancy workshops and the bat conservation zoom session were made possible through a generous donation from Ms. Julia Kramer.
