Albany Basketball Classic

The boys and girls varsity basketball teams, coaches, and staff traveled to Albany on May 20th for the 28th Legislative Basketball Classic. The event was hosted by Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas (34th AD) and Senator Jessica Ramos (13th SD), whose districts include Lexington School for the Deaf.
Both Assembly Member González-Rojas and Senator Ramos recognized the school and its students with special remarks during each chambers’ session. “I am so proud to represent and be a part of the Lexington School for the Deaf as their Assembly Member. This institution has become a true pillar of the community, serving a diverse population across the city and providing students with the opportunity to thrive and pursue prosperous, fulfilling lives. Tuesday’s basketball tournament was a testament to the talent and determination of the students at Lexington. Congratulations to all the players who participated,” said Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas.

Senator Jessica Ramos rallied for the Bluejays during her remarks to the Senate. "I'm proud to support and highlight the incredible prowess of the Lexington School for the Deaf, a beacon of excellence in education and a vital institution in the heart of Queens empowering deaf students across New York. Rooting for the Bluejays as they prepare to squash the Legislature‘s All Stars! LET'S GO Bluejays!"

Unfortunately for the Bluejays, the Legislative All-Stars squeezed out a 42-41 win during a closely contested game at Kipp Charter Middle School in Albany. Among those playing for the All-Stars were: Senator Jamaal Bailey and Assembly Members Khaleel Anderson, Ed Braunstein, Monique Chandler-Waterman, Landon Dais, Chantel Jackson, Ron Kim, Grace Lee, Dana Levenberg, Emerita Torres, Clyde Vanel, and Jordan Wright. Coaching the All-Stars from the sidelines were Speaker Carl Heastie and Assembly Member Larinda Hooks. Seth Bravin, Lexington’s interim CEO/Superintendent, and Nicolas Tegni, Athletic Director, served as referees.

The Classic was established by former Assembly Member Joseph Crowley, who represented Lexington School, and has been championed throughout the years by recently retired Assembly Member Jeffrion Aubry. The game has been held consistently since 1995 with a two-year break due to the pandemic. Teams play for bragging rights and the four-foot Classic Trophy.
