STEM Academy: New York City

Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in the New York City area, if you enjoy unique hands-on activities and meeting new friends, join us this summer for STEM Academy: New York City!

STEM Academy: NYC is three separate two-week programs with unique and interactive STEM topics. All programs are free for deaf and hard-of-hearing high school students.  Click here for the STEM Academy: NYC flyer - Summer 2023!
The programs are offered July 3 – August 11, 2023 at the Lexington School for the Deaf in New York City. Each program will accept up to 15 students and will focus on different STEM disciplines.

STEM Academy: Coding with VEX Robotics
July 3 –14 (closed July 4)
Come and explore how coding and robotics are used in programming and engineering fields. If you are curious about robots or coding – this is the place to be! Students will experience the thrill of building VEX robots and learn how to code and operate them in skills-based challenges. No prior robotics or coding experience is necessary.

STEM Academy: 3D Printing
July 17 –28
Explore how 3D printing is used and applied in various career fields. 3D Printing is the process of making and building an object using a 3D printer from a computer model. In this program, students will use a professional-grade 3D printer and 3D modeling software to learn the design process for prototyping, researching, and building solutions. Students will design an object from scratch and have the opportunity to print and take home their creation!

STEM Academy: Underwater Remote Operating Vehicles (ROV)
July 31 – August 11
This program will explore the underwater world of remote operating vehicles (ROV) and marine science. Students will work together to design, build, and test their ROV underwater robot while learning about marine ecosystems. Knowledge and skills gained from this program will help students learn how they can protect our oceans by using their very own ROV.

STEM Academy: NYC is a partnership between Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Lexington School for the Deaf.

In 2023, RIT/NTID entered into a partnership with Lexington School for the Deaf to offer a new series of programs called STEM Academy: NYC. The goal is to promote STEM education initiatives and career awareness for high school students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. This program is free for students.

STEM Academy is open to students in grades 9-12 who are deaf and hard-of-hearing who reside in the New York City area. STEM Academy welcomes students with all language experiences and communication modalities. While this program is currently only available to students in the New York City area, our intention is to expand to adjacent states. The primary goal is to encourage deaf and hard-of-hearing students to learn and to increase their understanding of STEM topics and experience in STEM fields.
