STEM Academy Team Teachers

We are seeking STEM Academy Team Teachers. Two teachers will work together (co-teach) in each subject (one Spoken English instructor and one ASL fluent instructor, except for ASL Teachers - both will be ASL fluent). The goal is to provide a language-rich environment and to provide communication access in both Spoken English and ASL. ASL Interpreters will be provided for every class. Teachers will provide skill building and academic support in their content area: English Language Arts (reading and writing), Math, American Sign Language, Social Emotional Learning, and STEM.

SUMMARY
STEM Academy is a summer academic program designed to prepare Deaf and Hard of hearing (DHH) students in grades 11-12 for college. The goals for DHH students in STEM Academy are:
  • Close academic gaps in content areas of English Language Arts, Math, and Social Emotional Learning
  • Develop and/or enhance American Sign Language literacy and skills.
  • Promote leadership skills.
  • Advance college readiness skills
  • Encourage an interest in STEM and develop STEM skills.
The academic structure is an immersive and intensive student-centered learning model with a language-rich environment. ASL interpreters will be provided for every class and bilingual education model will be utilized. This program is open to any DHH student who resides in the NYC area, Long Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Southern Connecticut. Students with all language experiences and communication modalities are welcomed.
 
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking STEM Academy Team Teachers. Two teachers will work together (co-teach) in each subject (one Spoken English instructor and one ASL fluent instructor, except for ASL Teachers - both will be ASL fluent). The goal is to provide a language-rich environment and to provide communication access in both Spoken English and ASL. ASL Interpreters will be provided for every class. Teachers will provide skill building and academic support in their content area: English Language Arts (reading and writing), Math, American Sign Language, Social Emotional Learning, and STEM. Teachers will develop and deliver interdisciplinary lessons and hands-on experiences, activities, and projects. Pre-assessments will be conducted to target instruction for improvement. Post-assessments will be given to compare data. Teachers will work with students in small groups and 1:1. Classes will be on a block schedule with preparation time. Training will be provided.
  • Must be available from July 14 - August 3, Monday-Friday 8:00AM - 4:00PM
  • Five classes each day with one prep period
  • Not a teachers union position
  • Required to participate in training and meetings prior to program.
Teachers who do not live in New York City and its surrounding areas might be provided with lodging for the duration of the program (limited availability) if requested and approved.
 
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Utilize bilingual education model and use primary language L1 (Spoken English or ASL) for instruction.
  • Provide individualized instruction to students and be knowledgeable of instructional strategies.
  • Utilize assessment data results to identify and target instruction for improvement.
  • Develop lessons and content materials aligned with New York State Standards that integrate instruction across content areas.
  • Implement differentiated instruction to accommodate students’ language needs, proficiencies, and learning styles.
  • Provide supervision and management to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.
  • Collaborate and work effectively with Team Teacher in lesson planning and curriculum development.
  • Strengthen students’ skills in problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.
  • Participate in professional development and training.
 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Deaf Education, or related field
  • Teaching Certification or applicable Certification/License as appropriate
  • Experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • ASL Teacher Position - ASL proficiency is required.
  • Excellent classroom management skills (familiarity with PBIS preferred)
  • Knowledge and experience using Google Apps for Education - Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.
SECURITY CLEARANCE
Required clearances:
  • Medical clearance
  • Fingerprint clearance by the New York City Board of Education for background check.
  • Statewide Central Register (SCR) clearance of Child Abuse and Maltreatment
  • Staff Exclusion List (SEL) clearance by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs Prospective employees will be required to pay any necessary fees for clearance. Any prospective employee who does not pass any clearance will not be given consideration for the position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
