Under the supervision of the Director of Pupil Personnel Services, the Nurse Coordinator will administer daily operations of Lexington Health Services, and will utilize clinical knowledge and judgement in providing first aid and wellness care to students, school staff, and Agency clientele.

POSITION SUMMARY:  
Under the supervision of the Director of Pupil Personnel Services, the Nurse Coordinator will administer daily operations
of Lexington Health Services, and will utilize clinical knowledge and judgement in providing first aid and wellness care to
students, school staff and Agency clientele.
 
PRIMARY DUTIES:
  • Plans and implements nursing procedures and plans of care.
  • Comply with procedures, protocols and other directives contained in school manuals and protocols.
  • Conducts full health assessment for incoming students and attends Multi-Disciplinary (MDT) meetings
  • Ensure that all incoming students meet school entry health requirements as determined by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
  • Provide nursing care and physical screenings to students; assess students and implement first aid measures for students and others as needed.
  • Assess and determine ill/injured student(s) disposition regarding returning to class, staying in Health Services Department, sending student(s) home/picked up by parent or referring to emergency room.
  • Store medicine in a pre-assigned safe place; recording and dispensing medications for students who require in-school medications, as ordered by physicians in compliance with NYC Board of Education and NYS regulations.
  • Maintain records of parental approval and dispense parentally approved over-the-counter medications.
  • Provide health education for various student health concerns, including but not limited to nutrition, hygiene, exercise and pubertal development.
  • Complete Accident Reports, provide needed first aid and make necessary referrals.
  • Maintain, evaluate, and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate the individual needs of students.
  • Facilitates student and family education related to current health needs.
  • Acts as a liaison between students/parents and outside agencies regarding current treatment
  • Implements regulations pertaining to licensing of facility, compliance with State regulations, compliance with State and Federal narcotic regulations.
  • Maintains all Health Services records and reports.
  • Plans and implements in-service programs and medically related training to all Educational and Residential staff members.
  • Collaborates with Residential Program for OCFS relicensing.
  • Support the school's Strategic Planning initiatives with an emphasis on strengthening the culture. Demonstrate commitment to purpose, vision, and mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  •  Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Customer service orientation.
  • Strong written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to respond professionally if faced with difficult situations.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities a must.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse with current New York State license
  • Current CPR – AED Certification
  • Working knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) or expectation to learn.
  • Valid malpractice insurance
  • Computer literate
  • Experience in both a hospital and school setting preferred.
SECURITY CLEARANCE:  
  •  Required clearances include medical clearance, fingerprinted by the NYC Board of Ed, SCR, and SEL clearance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
