Transportation Update

Thanks to the families who attended and provided testimony at the November 21st special New York City Council meeting on student transportation problems. Two Lexington families were interviewed by news stations. Check out the videos below.

The Executive Leadership Team would like to thank the families and Lexington staff who helped to organize Lexington’s participation and attendance at yesterday’s New York City Council special meeting on School Bus Transportation Services. The joint meeting, at City Hall in Manhattan, was called by the Council’s Committee on Oversight and Investigations and the Committee on Education. The Chief Schools Operation Officer and the Head of Transportation attended the meeting.
Lori Glick, School Social Worker, reached out to two City Council members, Rita Joseph, Education Committee Chair, and Tiffany Caban, Lexington’s City Council District 22 representative, for information and assistance about how to provide testimony. Meggi Smith, our Family Liaison, sent flyers, a Schoology posting, and a One-Call Now message to families to encourage their participation by either attending in person, Zoom testimony, or written testimony. Lori Glick helped by uploading written parent testimonies to City Council. Susan Ramirez, Lexington Transportation Coordinator, reached out specifically to those parents who were most impacted by the bus problems to make them aware of the opportunity to testify.
Laura Cruz, our Director of Pupil Personnel Services, and four Lexington parents – April Y., Amanda N., Araceli P., and Diana Y. - attended the meeting. Five Lexington parents submitted written testimony. Two of our Lexington parents,  were interviewed by Channel 2 CBS New York https://youtu.be/I5kj5aL9KqM and Eyewitness News ABC 7 NYC  https://abc7ny.com/nyc-bus-transportation-issues/12478329/
City Council members are demanding that changes be made. City Council members appeared to be well informed regarding how the lack of reliable transportation is impacting student education.  A video of the testimonies can be viewed at this link: https://councilnyc.viebit.com/player.php?hash=udxqhXoB5HFu      Amanda N.' s testimony appears at 3:19:26 in the video, but she is incorrectly identified as Courtney N.

Lexington is hopeful that yesterday’s testimony will result in positive changes for our students and families. We will keep families informed of any new developments or resources that will make transportation better for our students.
