Dear Friend of Lexington,
At Lexington, we open our arms – and our hearts – to the Deaf. Our students come from Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and Long Island. Many were born in countries with no schools or services for the Deaf. At Lexington, we help our students envision their futures….futures filled with learning and new opportunities. We help them thrive in both the Deaf and hearing worlds.
Taher Chowdhury, Lexington’s 2015 salutatorian, is one of our proud graduates. Taher’s widowed mother brought Taher and his siblings to New York City to offer them a better future. We asked Taher to share how Lexington has changed his life.
“I moved to America in 2008 from Bangladesh. In my country, I went to a hearing school, and I didn’t do well in school. I didn’t have hearing aids and it was very hard to communicate with hearing people. When I moved to America, I had to struggle with two new languages, English and ASL. I took advantage of all of Lexington’s services. I attended after-school and ACT tutoring sessions, I participated in community service, and I worked closely with the guidance office. I won four scholarship awards. I am proud of all I have accomplished. I have grown a lot with the support of Lexington and the education it provides to Deaf people. I have been accepted to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology and I will major in applied computer technology. To the Class of 2015, I wish all of you good luck. Let’s make our Deaf community proud!”
This holiday season, you can make a difference by helping a Deaf student to succeed!
